Crooked Lake Description

This is a double-loop trail through fields, along a bluff, and along the lakeshore. It is practically impossible to find a lake in northern Indiana that is not completely encircled by either summer cottages or year-round homes. This state-designated nature preserve protects about 3,500 feet of the north shoreline of Crooked Lake from such use. The spring-fed lake is one of the most pristine in Indiana, and one of the deepest at 105 feet. Forested slopes are dominated by beech and sugar maple associated with green ash, shagbark hickory, red oak, sassafras and white oak. The understory consists of sugar maple, ironwood, green ash, beech, and flowering dogwood. There are wetland habitats including marshes and calcareous seeps along the shore, and an island in the lake itself. Crooked Lake is a 206-acre natural lake located seven miles north of Columbia City. It sits at the top of the Tippecanoe Watershed and drains one square mile. Access is available at a public ramp at the west end of the lake. Water quality at Crooked Lake is very good. Crooked Lake has many catchable-size bluegill, yellow perch and other sunfish for interested anglers. In addition, largemouth bass are now more abundant, although numbers of legal-size bass remain low. The lake also supports a good diversity of other fish species, including ciscoes.
