Salamonie Lake Description

Salamonie Lake is created by Salamonie Lake Dam on the Salamonie River in Wabash County, Indiana and is used for flood control and recreation purposes. Construction of Salamonie Lake Dam was completed in 1966. At normal levels it has a surface area of 4.5 square miles. It is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lake property. The 2,665 acre Salamonie Lake is located in north central Indiana and is situated between its "sister" lakes J.E. Roush and Mississinewa. Attractions include Hanging Rock, 2 mi downstream from the dam, and Old Canal Locks at Largo. The lake was completed by the Corps of Engineers in 1966. From Wabash, S on IN 15, E on IN 124, N on IN 105 to Lost Bridge recreation sites. Salamonie Reservoir has tremendous crappie fishing opportunity. However, crappie populations fluctuate up and down every 3-7 years because of the interactions between shad populations in the reservoir. Fishing in Salamonie Reservoir is also good for bluegill and largemouth bass. Walleye are stocked every summer and provide marginal fishing opportunity in the reservoir and good opportunity in the Salamonie tailwaters and deep river holes downstream of the reservoir during spring and fall. Fall is best for walleye. Upstream and downstream of the reservoir, the Salamonie River provides good smallmouth bass and crappie fishing as well. Ice fishing for crappie is good and should be pursued with extreme caution. Water fluctuations make ice conditions very dangerous at times so approach edges with extreme caution. Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the ice. Salamonie also has small ponds around the area that provide good bass and panfishing. Within the Salamonie River State Forest, Hominy Ridge Lake also provides good bass and panfishing. A lake permit is required for fishing by non-motorized and motorized boat on Salamonie Reservoir and Hominy Ridge lake.
